Why I Sometimes Tell Patients Not to Have Composite Bonding
If you’ve spent any time on social media recently, you’ll have noticed that composite bonding seems to be everywhere.
It’s become one of the most talked about cosmetic dental treatments, and understandably so. When it’s used for the right reasons, it can make a huge difference to a smile without drilling healthy teeth or committing to more extensive treatment.
What might surprise you is that I regularly tell patients not to have composite bonding.
That probably sounds like a strange thing for a cosmetic dentist to say.
The reason is simple. My job isn’t to sell treatment. My job is to help people make the right decision for their smile.
Sometimes bonding is exactly what someone needs.
Sometimes it isn’t.
One of the most common situations I see is someone coming to me wanting composite bonding when the real issue is actually the position of their teeth.
If teeth are crowded, rotated or uneven, adding composite doesn’t always solve the problem. In many cases, moving the teeth first with Invisalign creates a far better foundation and often means less bonding is needed afterwards.
Occasionally, no bonding is needed at all.
Some of my favourite smile transformations have involved Invisalign and whitening alone.
Another thing I always look at is gum health.
A beautiful smile isn’t just about teeth. Healthy gums frame the smile and often make more difference than people realise. I’ve had patients who initially wanted cosmetic treatment but benefited more from improving their gum health first.
The truth is that good cosmetic dentistry is rarely about finding the quickest solution.
It’s about finding the right solution.
I could probably say yes to more treatments than I do. It would certainly be easier. But I would rather have a slightly awkward conversation today than see someone disappointed with the result a few years down the line.
The best cosmetic dentistry shouldn’t look like dentistry.
People shouldn’t immediately notice you’ve had treatment.
They should simply think you look healthier, fresher and more confident.
That’s always the goal.
I regularly see patients from Haverfordwest, Milford Haven, Fishguard, Tenby, Narberth, Carmarthen and across West Wales who are considering composite bonding but aren’t sure whether it’s the right option.
If that’s you, the first step is simply having a conversation. No pressure. No obligation. Just honest advice about what is possible for your smile.
